The Little Things

After a fifteen hour long work day, Jeremy came home and did this:
  • Ignored the toy mess in the T.V. room.
  • Took out the garbage.
  • Let Hayley play with his "special flashlight."
  • Listened to an account of my day, which really was not that interesting.
  • Put Hayley to bed, while I laid in bed and read a magazine.
  • After ten minutes, went back in, just to tell Hayley he was proud of her for staying in her bed.  So cute.
  • Came to bed and cuddled, even though I know he wanted to check his email, play a little PS3, or go directly to sleep on his side of the bed.
With days when it seems like marriage is so much more hectic than it used to be, it's nice to stop and appreciate the little things, and remember why I love my husband so much.

Compromise

As many of you know, choosing a name for this newest Bachman offspring has proven to be a chore.  Part of it is totally my fault, or rather the fault of the career path that I have chosen. There are many names that just will not do, because I had a kid with that name in my class over the years, and he was the stinky kid, the slow kid, the obnoxious kid, etc.  Part of it is society's fault, because I swear there are lots fewer boy names than girl names to begin with.  And I'm blaming part of it on Jeremy, because he's just as picky as I am.

So, without further ado, this child will be further known as Jackson Drake Bachman.   I got the Jackson and the J.D. initials, and Jeremy picked the middle name.  I don't love it, but I'll deal with it.  Still not sure where he got it from, since this is the only Drake I know:

Professor Lugwig Von Drake of the Ducktales cartoons.  More recently of the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse cartoons.

Hayley has taken to calling the baby Jackson Drake Cupcake.  I guess if you are going to give your little brother a nickname, it could be a lot worse, right?

Phew, I'm safe!

Last Monday I came in to work (ten minutes late, because that's just the way I roll lately) to my principal waiting for me. I though for sure I was going to get the "Please work on being on time" chat. Not so. Turns out one of the kids in my fourth grade class broke out in the Chicken Pox over the weekend, and my principal had been on the phone with the mom of the student for a good part of the morning. The mom was very concerned about my pregnancy and possible exposure to Chicken Pox. As a result, my principal was also very concerned.

Now, in the back of my mind, I was thinking, "I think if I've had it before I'm fine," but she suggested that I just call and check in with my doctor just to be safe. Now I'm a little nervous. Anyway, I called and turns out I was right: if you've had it before, you and your unborn child should be fine.

Fast forward to last Friday, when a case of Fifth's Disease was confirmed at our school. I freaked a little about that one, because I knew that I had read about it being very dangerous for pregnant women. Sure enough, good ol' Google provided the following:

"Infection during pregnancy can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, severe fetal anemia, and inflammation of the heart muscle."

Perfect. So again, another call to my doctor, who was more concerned with this development. In to the lab I go, to see if I am one of the 50% of women who are immune to the disease, or part of the other half, who are not so lucky.

Now, about having blood drawn. I'm okay with it. I can't watch them do it, but it doesn't totally weird me out or anything. However, here are the words that I don't love to hear as they are prodding my arm: "Um, do they ever have trouble finding a vein? (followed by more prodding) Um, maybe we should try your other arm." This irritates me because (a) I've actually been told by "blood suckers" that I'm not a hard stick, and (b) it makes me feel like the"blood sucker" (fine, the technician) doesn't know what they are doing. Sure enough, when she finally stuck me, it hurt like the dickens, and I have the grossest green bruise to prove it.

Anyway, two vials of blood and a couple days later, the lab called back. I'm fine and so is the baby. At least it wasn't Swine Flu. Or Giraffe Flu. According to Vanda, that could be even worse. Good thing you can only catch it in Djibouti. Or so Tawnya says...

I may need a day off or a good stiff drink after last week.

Oh, right. That's not safe in pregnancy either.

Seriously though...

So, I've realized in looking back at my blog that it looks like all I ever do is spoil Hayley. While that's true lately, I've also realized that I have some reasoning behind it. I think that subconsciously I'm a little apprehensive about this new child coming along. I'm not nervous that he won't be loved, or that I won't be a good mom, or that I won't be able to figure out how to be a mom to a boy (although that presents a whole new set of fun and games, apparently), rather I'm nervous that two kids seems like so much more effort.

We've been a one kid family for over three years now. At first I was just worried about what Hayley's reaction to this baby would be, but honestly, I think it's going to be an adjustment for all of us. There are a lot of things that just seem like they will be a lot harder, or not worth it at all. Even just imagining it, it seems that loading two kids into the car and into carseats to take them out again at WalMart, to then load them both in a shopping cart, all to pick up some bread and milk... I think I may rather starve to tell you the truth.

I know that soon, gone will be the days of being able to just plunk Hayley in the car for a full afternoon of errands, and that back will be the more structured days of naps and feedings and interrupted sleep. Only this time, there will be a three-year-old to entertain as well. It just seems like a lot.

I know that many of you with more than one child are old hat at this, and I admire you. I also know that this overwhelmed feeling won't be near as overwhelming as both kids grow, but I don't really know if I want that to happen either.

So, really I'm just trying to squeeze in as much quality time with my only child as I can, before she's not an only child anymore. While I really am so exicted for all the changes that are going to take place in my life, it's still change. And when you feel like you've got such a good thing going already, it's hard to imagine that life could get any better.

Wild Things

Decided to celebrate Mother's Day by buying an annual pass to Hogle Zoo. What a fun time! I remember vividly being scared to death to stick my head inside the lion fountain to get a drink. Hayley, not so much:

We did all the oldies but goodies... Notice how all of Hayley's favorites are also characters in the Madagascar movie? I don't think that's a coincidence!

...and some of the fun newer stuff that they had. It's amazing how much the zoo has changed.

All in all, a great day! Happy Mother's Day to me!

Aw, Honeybun!

Got tagged by Melissa to do this one. It was kinda fun. If you haven't done this about you and your honey yet, feel free.

♥ What are your middle names? Ann and David

♥ How long have you been together? Six years today. Happy Anniversary Jer!

♥ How long did you know each other before you started dating? We didn't know each other at all before we started dating. We met on a blind date.

♥ Who asked who out? He asked me.

♥ How old are each of you? Jeremy just turned 30, I'm 28 for another month.

♥ Whose siblings do you see the most? Probably mine, but not by much.

♥ Do you have any children together? Three-year-old Hayley and a boy due in August.

♥ What about pets? Kids are enough, thanks.

♥ Did you go to the same school? No.

♥ Are you from the same home town? No. Jer's from Centerville, I'm from West Valley.

♥ Who is the smartest? It really depends on the subject.

♥ Who is the most sensitive? Me. I can get bent out of shape to the point of tears pretty fast.

♥ Where do you eat out most as a couple? Chili's. The bartender knows Jeremy by name.

♥ Where is the furthest you two have traveled together as a couple? Hawaii, and it was amazing!

♥ Who has the craziest exes? Both of us.

♥ Who has the worst temper? Him, but it takes a lot for him to get really angry.

♥ Who does the cooking? Both of us. I'd do it more if he wasn't so indecisive.

♥ Who is more social? Depends on the people we are around. I'd say both again.

♥ Who is the Neat Freak? Jeremy. Like crazy!

♥ Who is the more stubborn? Jeremy.

♥ Who hogs the bed? Thanks to the California King bed, neither of us.

♥ Who wakes up earlier? Whoever has to go to work that day.

♥ Where was your first date? Dinner at some little Mexican place in Bountiful, and then we watched a movie. (Yes, we actually watched it.)

♥ Who has the bigger family? Him. Three brothers, one sister. Two of them are married. A total of five cousins (all of them boys!) for Hayley to play with.

♥ Do you get flowers often? If I request them, which kind of defeats the purpose. I think Jer kind of thinks they are a waste of money. I kind of see his point.

♥ How do you spend the holidays? Well, last year we did about six parties in three days. That's pretty typical.

♥ Who is more jealous? Of what?

♥ How long did it take to get serious? Until our second date. (We didn't watch the movie so much that night.)

♥ Who eats more? Me, but currently I blame the child I'm carrying.

♥ Who does the laundry? Me, but he has to bring the full baskets down to the Laundry Room.

♥ Who’s better with the computer? Fixing things: him. Playing: me.

♥ Who drives when you are together? Jer does.

Quirks and all, I love ya Jeremy! Happy Six Year Anniversary!

Where a kid can be a kid!

Posted by Picasa

For a family fun night, we took Hayley to Chuck E. Cheese. She loved it. Pizza, rides, games, tickets, prizes, characters, this is totally her kind of place! Much better and much cheaper than the Mayan, which we did last month. Ick.

What did you say?

Sometimes I swear this kid is like a sponge, and other times, I don't know where she gets this stuff. Here are some of Hayley's favorite things to say lately:

"That's not necessary Mom."

"What do you think about that situation?"

"Okay, here's the deal..."

"Put your seat belt on or the policeman will come yell at you!"

"Don't look at me. You're bugging me!"

"Actually, I don't think so."

"How about you go to Time Out and I go on the Trax Train to Disneyland by myself?"

"So, how was your day?"

"You're killin' me!"

"Seriously? Seriously?"

"That's a great idea!"

"I'm hungry! I'm just so hungry every single day!" (Of course, usually she says this in public, causing others to think we starve our child. Funny how she's only "so hungry" when she wants a treat.)

"Stupid grandpa car. What an idiot!" (She got this one from the movie Cars. Apparently I need to sensor the Disney movies she watches.)

Also, when she sings "Ring Around the Rosie" her "ashes, ashes" sounds a little more like... well, something else... (Take out the H)

Other funny conversations:

Me: "Hayley, what do you think we should name the baby?"
Hayley: "I think Jackson. Or Cupcake. That would be okay."

Hayley: "Mom, are you Santa?"
Me: (a little stunned) "Do I look like Santa?"
Hayley: "Your tummy does!"
She has a point. I'm just glad she wasn't asking if I was the Santa at all of her three years old.

Hayley: "Mom, where does Buddy (Whitney's dog) go poop?"
Me "On the grass."
Hayley: "Because he's a dog?"
Me: "Yes."
Hayley: "I wish I was a dog so I could go poop on the grass."
I guess it's never too early to dream big.

And two more that are just plain sweet:

I asked Hayley to share one of her gummies with me. She gave me one and said, "I'm sharing with you. Know why? Because I love you!"

After an evening of Hayley being a Naughty Nellie and not staying in bed, I was laying with her until she fell asleep. I thought she was asleep and leaned over to kiss her cheek and said, "I love you." Apparently she wasn't asleep, because she rolled over and said, "I love you too, Mom. You're my best mommy. I love you even when I'm naughty."
Way to know when it's time to suck up kid!
